4.0 Is Coming!

Over the past few weeks I have been hard at work on MenuWeather 4.0. Early this week I agreed on terms with CustomWeather for premium weather data in MenuWeather. What does this mean exactly? Well, in the past MenuWeather has relied on free (buggy) API’s for requesting its weather data. This led to slow refresh times, and unexpected changes in the ways that these free API’s report their data. Another downside of using free weather API’s is the lack of available information. Right now, MenuWeather only gives you a short daily forecast and current conditions. My deal with CustomWeather gives me access to so much more. Basically every piece of weather data that you would ever need or want in a weather application.

As for a release date for version 4.0, there isn’t one. All I can say is that it will be done before the end of the summer. 4.0 is going to be a 100% rewrite of the application. That means I’m pretty much starting from scratch. What does this mean for you? MenuWeather 4.0 will be so much faster than the presently available version. It will also be much more lightweight (i.e. less memory usage).

MenuWeather Roadmap

Ever since MenuWeather’s inception into the Mac App Store I have been inundated with feature requests for future versions. I am not ignoring these requests. Eventually they will all be met. MenuWeather 4.0, which will debut this summer, will contain many new features and enhancements. To list a few:

  • Paid version will be available worldwide
  • Multiple localizations
  • More weather data in paid version
  • Ability to choose units specifically for each piece of weather data

These are just a few of the features that I plan to include in MenuWeather 4.0.

On a side note, MenuWeather 3.2.3 was submitted to the App Store last night and is currently awaiting review.

MenuWeather 3.2.2

First off, now when I refer to MenuWeather, I’m referring to both the Lite and full versions.

As many of you probably know, MenuWeather 3.2.2 is now available on the Mac App Store. Changes include several bug fixes and enhancements. Unfortunatley, some people still seem to be experiencing problems with it. This leads me to belive that my testing methods need a serious overhaul. I’m currently looking into services that will help with this. More info regarding this will become available once I have it.

The main bug that people are reporting is that MenuWeather is telling them that their location is invalid. I’m currently looking into the issue and hope to have an update submitted to Apple by early next week.

Please be sure that if your having a problem with MenuWeather to always consult the help page on this site before contacting me. Contacting me should be a last resort. If you must contact me, do so by using the Send Feedback option in MenuWeather as this will send me all of the information that I need to diagnose (and hopefully fix) your problem.

MenuWeather (Lite) Update…Soon

MenuWeather and MenuWeather Lite version 3.2.2 has been done for almost a week now. It includes several bug fixes and improves the way MenuWeather handles errors. It also fixes a huge memory build-up (not leak) which would cause MenuWeather to consume up to 3 gigs of real memory when running for an extended period. Unfortunatley, due to Apple’s subpar App Store approval process, 3.2.2 may not be out for another week or so. Both the paid and Lite versions were submitted last Sunday (2/20). The paid version has been “In Review” for several days and the Lite version was rejected because apparently the name of the application bundle, MenuWeather Lite, does not match the App Store name, MenuWeather Lite (don’t ask). I’ve resubmitted the Lite version and emailed the App Store review team so hopefully that will be sorted out sooner than later. However, I still have no idea what’s going on with the paid version. I’ve heard horror stories of apps staying In Review for several months just because Apple can’t make a decision. Hopefully that won’t be the case here.

Overall, I’m really disappointed in the way that Apple handles the App Store review process. In my opinion it’s kind of embarrassing that they can’t get their act together. Hopefully both MenuWeather versions will be accepted soon, but there really is no way of knowing.

MenuWeather in The App Store

As you may or may not know, both MenuWeather and MenuWeather Lite are now available in the Mac App Store. MenuWeather Lite is doing great, it has peaked at #19 in Top Free overall in the U.S. and is getting around 2,000 downloads every day. MenuWeather, on the other hand, isn’t doing too great. According to many of its users, it’s buggy, slow and unreliable. All of these problems are being fixed, and an update should be submitted to Apple for approval this weekend. I’m very grateful for MenuWeather Lite’s success and I hope that MenuWeather can be just as successful.
