The End of TubePod

Today, TubePod is officially discontinued. It’s page has been removed from the site and it will be removed from all third-party download sites. There are several reasons for why I have made this decision. First of all, it is written in AppleScript Studio which is slow and unreliable. To rewrite the entire application would be extremely time consuming. Also, there are so many other great programs that do what TubePod did. I recommend MacTubes.

In other news, I have submitted MenuWeather to that Mac App Store. As outlined earlier, there will be two versions. One U.S. only for $2.99 and one for the world for free (with limited features). More news will coming following its acceptance into the store.

The Future of TubePod & MenuWeather 3.1

As you may already know, MenuWeather 3.1 was released today. The only new feature is basic support for Growl notifications. The next release will have support for built-in radar maps and MAYBE severe weather alerts. The problem with severe weather alerts is the data source. Yahoo, which I use now, doesn’t report weather alerts so I’ll have to use something else. The problem is finding an API which accepts WOEID’s which is what the Yahoo API’s use for locations. If severe weather alerts don’t make it into the next release, I’m sure I’ll figure it out eventually.

TubePod was the first application that I ever released and for the past year or so, it hasn’t been working quite right. I received reports of videos being distorted after being converted, videos not downloaded, and a whole bunch of other problems. What I hope to do is completely rewrite TubePod in native Cocoa. Right now it’s written in Applescript Studio which, with the release of Snow Leopard, is deprecated. It’s slow and unreliable. Rewriting TubePod is a huge undertaking and it will take time. I’m not going to give an ETA for the release because, as you may have noticed, whenever I release an ETA, I don’t meet it. I hope to begin work on TubePod before the new year.

TubePod 1.1

TubePod has been updated to version 1.1. This version fixes several bugs and drops support for Mac OS X Tiger. It is also now donationware. You can donate through the program or by clicking the donate button to the right.

TubePod 1.0.6

TubePod 1.0.6 is now out. The only change is that it incorporates the newest release of the Sparkle update framework.

TubePod 1.0.5

TubePod 1.0.5 is now out and available for download. Version 1.0.5 fixes two major bugs that in some cases prevented TubePod from working correctly. Visit the TubePod page to get the update.
